Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an upcoming horror game from Gun Interactive based on the popular 1974 film. The asymmetric horror game is a beacon of light for those interested in the genre due to the scarcity of titles. Gun Interactive released “Friday the 13th”, in 2017. However, the game didn’t sit well and was gradually shut down over the next few years. Gun Interactive will take strict measures to ensure that its upcoming title doesn’t fall into similar pitfalls as summarised by their statement.

Why did Friday the 13th fail?

The game got off to a great start! It was just a year into the game’s release when both Gun Interactive and Illfonic were forced into a legal battle. The lengthy battle gravely impacted the development of the game and the judgement completely shut the game down. Gun Interactive was advised to not release new content for the game.

The multiplayer servers for Friday the 13th were eventually taken down in 2020 and the game came to a complete halt. The game was scheduled to be completely removed from digital stores as Gun Interactive lost its license.

How will Texas Chainsaw Massacre be different?

PCgamesN recently conducted an interview with Ronnie Hobbs, the creative director behind the upcoming game. According to what was stated during the interview, the legal battle that conspired in 2018 was a complete mess due to the franchise’s multiple rights holders. However, they have learned from their mistakes, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre will only have one sole holder, Kim Henkel. In order to prevent history from repeating itself, the developers will be working closely with Kim to ensure a smooth launch.

What can we expect in the future?

Film rights are complicated with blurry lines all around. According to Hobbs, the new partnership between the company and Kim, allows the developers to create more content for the franchise and the upcoming game. The director also hinted that there might be DLCs being released for the game in the near future as they dwell deeper into the roots of the horror universe.

Gun Interactive is working itself to its limits in order to guarantee the game’s quality. While Texas Chainsaw Massacre does share similar traits with its predecessor, the developers wish to push the boundaries of the asymmetrical horror genre as much as possible. The game is set to release on the 18th of August 2023, and if you are a fan of the horror genre, we highly recommend it. There are launch sales all around and Gun Interactive’s commitment is sure to make the game a success.
